Kalmunai: Quiet East-Coast Beaches South of Batticaloa
Kalmunai is one of the more densely populated towns on the east coast, a lively commercial centre for the surrounding coastal communities south of Batticaloa. It is not a resort town, which is part of its appeal: the beaches nearby are wide, quiet and largely undeveloped.
Beaches and lagoons
The coast around Kalmunai and neighbouring towns runs in long strips of sand backed by palms and lagoons. Early morning, when the fishing boats come in, is the best time to walk the shore.
A working town
Kalmunai is a good place to see everyday east-coast life, with busy markets and a mix of Tamil and Muslim communities. Food here leans towards fresh seafood and fragrant, spice-heavy rice dishes.
Getting there
Kalmunai sits on the coastal road south of Batticaloa, on the way towards Ampara and Arugam Bay. Buses run frequently along the eastern coastal route.
