Jaffna, at the country’s northern tip, has a character all its own: Tamil Hindu culture, flat palmyra-dotted landscapes, and a food scene built on crab and bold spice. Long hard to reach, it now sits at the end of the northern railway.

Nallur Kandaswamy Temple

This large, golden Hindu temple is the spiritual heart of the city, busiest during its dramatic multi-day festival. Dress modestly; men often remove their shirts inside as is customary.

Fort and town

The star-shaped Dutch fort by the lagoon is worth a walk, along with the public library, an emblem of the city rebuilt after the war.

Islands and beaches

Causeways and short ferries reach islands like Kayts and Karainagar and, further out, Delft with its wild ponies. Casuarina Beach is the popular shallow swimming spot.

Food

Jaffna crab curry and the region’s hotter, tamarind-rich cooking are highlights. Try a traditional meal served on a banana leaf.
