Island Hopping from Jaffna: Delft, Nainativu and the Causeways

The islands off Jaffna are a world of their own, reached by causeways that run straight across the shallow lagoon and by small public ferries. They make a brilliant day of slow, offbeat exploring.
The islands
Delft (Neduntheevu) is famous for its wild ponies, coral-stone walls and a baobab tree. Nainativu holds an important Buddhist temple and a Hindu kovil side by side, reached by a short ferry.
The causeways
The drive out to Kayts and Karainagar crosses long causeways with water on both sides, a memorable ride by scooter or tuk-tuk.
Plan ahead
Ferries are cheap but can be crowded and run to their own timetable, so start early and keep the day flexible.
