Jaffna rewards a slow pace. Flat roads, low traffic and a scattering of new cafes make it a lovely place to rent a bicycle and drift between the fort, the market and the coast.

On two wheels

Guesthouses often lend or rent bicycles. Ride out to the Dutch fort at golden hour, loop past the grand Nallur kovil, and stop wherever a shutter or a shrine catches your eye.

The cafe wave

A small but growing cafe culture is taking root, serving proper coffee, palmyra-based treats and cool spots to escape the midday heat.

The mood

Jaffna feels calm and unhurried compared with the south. Lean into it: long breakfasts, an afternoon rest, and evenings by the water.
