Isurumuniya: Rock Temple of the Lovers Carving
Isurumuniya is a small but atmospheric rock temple in Anuradhapura, set beside a lotus pond and built into a boulder. It is best known for a delicate stone carving popularly called the Isurumuniya Lovers, along with other fine reliefs. The blend of rock, water and sculpture gives it real charm.
The carvings
The famous lovers relief, along with carvings of horses, elephants and royal figures, are housed here and in the small museum. They are considered among the finest examples of early Sri Lankan stone art.
The setting
A pond fed by nearby reservoirs sits at the foot of the rock, and you can climb a short way up for views. The whole site is compact and easy to explore in under an hour.
Visiting tips
Modest dress and shoe removal apply as it is an active temple. It pairs well with the other sacred city sites within Anuradhapura.
