Hummanaya: The South Coast Blowhole
Hummanaya, near Dickwella on the south coast, is the best known blowhole in Sri Lanka. Waves surge into a rock crevice and force water upward through a natural vent, sending a plume into the air. The name comes from the deep humming sound it makes just before each burst.
How it works
Sea swell pushes into an underwater channel and is funnelled up through the rock, spraying water skyward. The height of the spout depends heavily on the size of the incoming waves.
Best conditions
Rougher seas produce the biggest and most frequent bursts, so visit when the swell is up. On calmer days the blowhole may only spray weakly, so temper expectations.
Staying safe
The rocks around the vent are wet and slippery, and waves can be unpredictable. Watch from the viewing area, keep children close and never lean over the hole for a photo.
