Horton Plains is a cool, windswept plateau high in the central hills, protected as a national park. Its famous loop walk leads to World’s End, an escarpment where the land falls away hundreds of metres in a single drop.

The loop trail

The circuit is about nine kilometres over gentle terrain and takes roughly three hours, passing World’s End, the smaller Mini World’s End, and Baker’s Falls before returning across open grassland.

Start early

Arrive at opening. By mid-morning cloud usually rolls in and hides the view from World’s End, so the earliest start gives the best chance of a clear drop.

What to bring

It is genuinely cold at dawn at this altitude, so bring a warm layer, plus water and sun protection for when the mist burns off. Single-use plastics are restricted in the park.

Getting there

Most visitors come from Nuwara Eliya or Haputale; the Ohiya and Pattipola stations sit close to the park entrances.
