Hiriketiya: The Horseshoe Surf Bay
By Days of Iru and Opa
Hiriketiya, "Hiri" to regulars, is a small sheltered bay near Dickwella on the deep south coast. Its curved beach offers both easy swimming and a fun wave, and it has grown a laid-back surf-and-yoga scene.
The bay
The sheltered horseshoe shape gives calm water for swimming inside and a beginner-to-intermediate wave at the mouth. A reef break outside suits stronger surfers.
The vibe
Cafes, smoothie bowls, yoga and small guesthouses ring the bay. It is popular, so it can feel busy in high season.
Nearby
The Hummanaya blowhole, one of the largest in the world, and the beaches around Dickwella and Tangalle are close by.
