Hikkaduwa: Surf, Reef and Beach-Bar Nights

Hikkaduwa was one of Sri Lanka's first beach destinations and still knows how to have a good time. It blends surf breaks and a coral reef by day with a string of beach bars and restaurants after dark.
By day
The reef offers snorkelling and glass-bottom boat trips, while the surf breaks suit beginners through to intermediates. Sea turtles are often spotted feeding close to shore.
By night
The beachfront comes alive with bars, music and the odd party, busier and louder than the quieter south coast towns. Weekends are the liveliest.
Getting there
Hikkaduwa is an easy train or road hop south from Colombo and just north of Galle, which makes it a simple first beach stop.
