Hikkaduwa: Coral, Turtles and the Reef
Hikkaduwa built its reputation on its reef. A protected coral sanctuary sits close to shore, sea turtles graze in the shallows, and the town has an easy-going surf-and-beach energy.
The coral sanctuary
The marine sanctuary is shallow enough to snorkel from the beach, with glass-bottom boat trips for those who prefer to stay dry. Reefs have suffered bleaching over the years, so choose operators who keep their distance from the coral.
Turtles
Green turtles regularly feed just off the main beach and are often seen by snorkellers. Please don’t touch or ride them.
Surf and nightlife
There are beginner-friendly breaks in the season, and the town is one of the livelier spots on the coast after dark.
Getting there
Hikkaduwa is on the southern railway and the coastal expressway, an easy hop from Galle or Colombo.
