Haputale and Lipton's Seat: Tea Country Views
Haputale clings to a ridge in Uva tea country, with valleys falling away on both sides. Above it lies Lipton’s Seat, the viewpoint the tea baron favoured, reached through some of the most scenic estates in the highlands.
Lipton's Seat
On a clear morning the viewpoint looks out over a sea of tea and, in the far distance, toward the south coast. Go at dawn before the cloud builds; the view often closes in by late morning.
The tea estates
The walk or tuk-tuk ride up passes the Dambatenne tea factory, one of Lipton’s original factories, which runs tours showing how black tea is made.
Around town
Haputale itself is a working railway town with a bracing climate and easy access to the Adisham Bungalow, a stone monastery garden.
Getting there
It sits on the scenic hill-country railway between Nanu Oya and Ella, and is a quieter base than Ella or Nuwara Eliya.
