Hanthana: The Green Ridge Above Kandy
The Hanthana range rises just south of Kandy, a series of green peaks that many locals hike for exercise and views. Declared an environmental protection area, it holds grassland, small patches of forest and tea land. On a clear day the ridges offer sweeping outlooks over Kandy and the surrounding hills.
The hike
Trails climb from the University of Peradeniya area and nearby villages toward the higher peaks. Some routes are steep and can take several hours, so start early and carry enough water.
Views and scenery
From the tops you can see Kandy, distant mountains and, on rare clear mornings, even further ranges. The mix of grassy slopes and pine stands gives Hanthana its distinctive look.
Good to know
Weather can change fast, with mist rolling in during the afternoon. A local guide is helpful for the longer traverses, as some paths are faint and branch in confusing ways.
