Galle Lighthouse: The Fort’s Most Photographed Corner
The Galle lighthouse stands on the southern ramparts inside the old Dutch fort, a slim white tower that is the single most photographed spot in Galle. The current tower dates from 1939, and with a coconut palm leaning beside it and the sea behind, it is a classic image of the south coast.
What to see
The lighthouse sits on Point Utrecht Bastion, next to the Meeran Jumma Mosque, whose white minarets add to the scene. You cannot climb the tower, but the ramparts around it are a lovely walk, especially in the golden hour before sunset.
Around it
From here you can stroll the full circuit of the fort walls, past the old gates, bastions and cannon, then drop into the cafes and boutiques of the lanes inside. Flag Rock at the far end is the favourite sunset viewpoint.
Getting there
Galle Fort is at the end of the southern expressway and railway, about two hours from Colombo. The lighthouse is an easy walk from the fort’s main gate.
