Galle Fort: Things to Do in the Old Colonial Town
By Days of Iru and Opa
Galle Fort is a small peninsula wrapped in thick colonial ramparts, and inside it feels like a different, slower country. The streets are narrow and shaded, lined with old villas that are now cafes, galleries, and small shops.
What to expect
Walk the ramparts at the top of the day or near sunset when local families gather on the walls. Inside, the Dutch Reformed Church, the lighthouse, and the old warehouses give the fort its character, and the whole loop is easy on foot.
Good to know
The fort is a day trip or overnight from the south-coast beaches. Come early morning or late afternoon to dodge the midday heat, and give yourself time to just get lost in the lanes.
