Galle Fort: A Walk Through the Colonial Coast
Galle Fort is a small, living old town inside 17th-century Dutch ramparts. There are no big sights to tick off; the pleasure is wandering the lanes, watching the sea from the walls, and stopping for coffee in a colonial townhouse.
The ramparts
The walls loop the whole peninsula and are free to walk. Late afternoon is best, when locals gather, kids leap from the walls near the lighthouse, and the sunset from the western bastions is superb.
Inside the walls
The white lighthouse, the old Dutch Reformed Church, and the maritime museum anchor a grid of streets lined with boutiques, galleries, and cafes. It is genuinely walkable in half a day.
Beaches nearby
Unawatuna, Jungle Beach, and Dalawella (with its famous rope swing) are a short tuk-tuk from the fort, and the surf towns of Ahangama and Weligama are down the coast.
Getting there
The southern expressway makes Galle about two hours from Colombo. The coastal train is slower but hugs the shore the whole way.
