Gal Vihara: Polonnaruwa's Masterpieces in Stone
Gal Vihara is the highlight of ancient Polonnaruwa, a group of Buddha statues carved from one long face of granite in the twelfth century. The reclining, standing and seated figures are widely regarded as the finest stone sculpture in Sri Lanka. Their calm faces and flowing lines still draw quiet admiration.
The four images
The set includes a large reclining Buddha, a standing figure and seated forms, each showing remarkable skill in the carving of robe and expression. Standing before them, the scale and serenity are striking.
Why it stands out
The sculptors worked with the natural grain of the rock, and the polish and detail have survived centuries. Together the figures are considered a peak of the island's classical art.
