Gal Oya: Boat Safaris and Swimming Elephants
Gal Oya is one of Sri Lanka’s least-visited parks, built around the vast Senanayake Samudra reservoir. Its signature experience is a boat safari, and if you are lucky, the sight of elephants swimming across the water.
The boat safari
Rather than a jeep, you explore by boat across the reservoir and among its islands, watching for elephants, water birds, crocodiles and deer along the shores.
Swimming elephants
Gal Oya is famous for the rare chance of seeing elephants swim between islands, using their trunks as snorkels. Sightings are never guaranteed but the setting is special regardless.
The indigenous connection
The area is home to Vedda communities, Sri Lanka’s indigenous people, and some lodges arrange respectful cultural walks.
Access
It is off the main trails, reached from Ampara or on the route between the hill country and the east coast, which keeps crowds away.
