Ella: Nine Arches, Little Adam's Peak, and the Train
Ella is where travellers slow down. It sits in a gap in the hills with big views on both sides, easy walks that start from the main street, and a famous railway bridge a short stroll away.
Nine Arches Bridge
This colonial-era viaduct curves through the jungle on nine stone arches built with no steel. Trains cross a handful of times a day, and standing on or below the bridge as one passes is the classic Ella photo. Check the current times locally.
Little Adam's Peak and Ella Rock
Little Adam's Peak is an easy 45-minute walk to a ridge with a panorama of the valley, ideal at sunrise. Ella Rock is harder, two to three hours along the railway and through tea, and worth an early start and a rough map or guide.
The train ride
The Kandy or Nuwara Eliya to Ella train winds past tea estates, waterfalls, and tunnels. Sit by an open door for the views. It is slow, so treat the journey as the attraction.
Nearby
Ravana Falls is a roadside cascade a short tuk-tuk ride away, and Diyaluma and Bambarakanda falls are day trips for anyone chasing waterfalls.
