Ella Rock: The Longer Hike Above the Valley
By Days of Iru and Opa
Ella Rock is the bigger sibling to Little Adam’s Peak, a two-to-three-hour hike that starts along the train tracks and climbs through tea and forest to a broad summit view.
The route
The classic route follows the railway line out of Ella before turning up through tea estates and woodland. The trail is not signposted, so a rough map, a guide, or asking locals helps you avoid wrong turns.
What to expect
Allow two to three hours up and a similar time back. Start early to beat the heat and the afternoon cloud, and carry water.
Safety
Walking along the railway needs care; step well clear when trains pass. Some "guides" appear along the way, so agree any fee up front.
