Dondra Head Lighthouse: The Southern Tip of Sri Lanka
Dondra Head, just beyond the town of Dondra near Matara, is the southernmost point of Sri Lanka. Its lighthouse, built by the British and first lit in 1890, is one of the tallest in the country at close to 50 metres. Standing at the base with the Indian Ocean stretching south, you are as far south as the island goes.
The lighthouse
The octagonal tower is still a working navigation light. Its stone was shipped in during construction and it has guided ships along this busy shipping lane for well over a century. Access to climb the tower itself is limited, but the grounds and the point make the trip worthwhile.
Getting there
It is around a 15 minute drive from Matara town, easily reached by tuk-tuk. Combine it with the Tewatta and Dondra area or a stop in Matara for its own fort and Star Fort.
When to go
Late afternoon is pleasant, with softer light on the tower and the sea breeze taking the edge off the heat. Bring water and sun cover, as the point is exposed.
