Delft Island: Wild Ponies and Coral Walls
Delft, known locally as Neduntheevu, is a flat coral island in the sea off Jaffna, reached by ferry. It is unlike anywhere else in Sri Lanka, with herds of wild ponies, fences and buildings made of coral stone, and a strange growing rock. A rare baobab tree, a relic of old trade routes, adds to its curiosities.
What to see
Highlights include the free roaming ponies, the coral stone walls, an old Dutch fort ruin and the ancient baobab tree. The landscape is dry, open and quite unlike the rest of the island.
Getting there
A government ferry runs from a jetty on the peninsula, and demand can exceed space, so arrive early. On the island, hiring a local vehicle helps you cover the sights.
Practical notes
Facilities are very limited, so bring water, food and sun protection. Give the wild ponies space and treat the fragile island environment gently.
