Casuarina Beach lies on Karainagar island near Jaffna, named for the casuarina trees that line the shore. The water here is shallow and calm for a long way out, making it one of the most family friendly beaches in the north. It is a popular local spot at weekends.

The water

Because the sea stays shallow far from shore, you can wade out a long way, which suits families and cautious swimmers. The gentle conditions are quite different from the surf beaches of the south.

The setting

Rows of casuarina trees give shade along the sand, and the flat northern light is lovely late in the day. It has a simple, unhurried character.

Getting there

Casuarina is a drive from Jaffna town across to Karainagar, an easy day trip. Bring your own water and snacks, as facilities are basic.
