Bomburu Ella: A Wide Cascade Above Nuwara Eliya
Bomburu Ella lies in the hills east of Nuwara Eliya, near the village of Perakumba Pura. It is often described as one of the widest waterfalls in Sri Lanka, spreading across the rock in several strands. The approach passes vegetable plots and cool highland scenery.
The approach
A footpath leads from the end of the road down toward the falls, roughly a half hour walk depending on pace. The trail crosses farmland and streams, so expect uneven, sometimes muddy ground.
What makes it special
Rather than a single narrow plunge, Bomburu Ella fans out over a broad rock face. After rain it looks especially full, though the path is also muddier then.
Plan around the weather
The highland climate is cool and can turn misty quickly. Bring a layer, allow time for the walk both ways, and start earlier in the day for better light and clearer skies.
