Beruwala, just north of Bentota, is one of the older resort areas on the west coast and home to a long-established Muslim community. It mixes a broad beach with a busy fishing harbour and a landmark mosque.

The beach

A wide sandy beach lined with hotels curves along the coast, calm enough for swimming for much of the west-coast season (roughly November to April).

Kechimalai Mosque

The white-and-green Kechimalai mosque sits on a headland above the sea and is one of the oldest mosques in the country, especially busy at festival times.

Nearby

Bentota’s watersports and river safaris are next door, and the gem town of Aluthgama is close by.
