Batticaloa: Lagoon Life, Seafood and Singing Fish
By Days of Iru and Opa
Batticaloa wraps around a large lagoon on the east coast, and life here moves to the rhythm of fishing and water. It is a quieter, less-touristed base with good seafood and a distinct eastern culture.
The food
Lagoon and sea catch drive the menus, from crab and prawns to fresh fish curries. The eastern style leans on coconut and its own spice balance, worth seeking out.
On the lagoon
Boat trips explore the wide waterways, and the area is famous for the legend of the "singing fish" said to be heard on calm nights near the old bridge.
Getting around
The town is spread out around the water, so a bicycle or tuk-tuk helps. It pairs naturally with Pasikuda for beaches and Trincomalee further north.
