Balangoda: Prehistoric Caves and the Road to the Highlands

Balangoda is a pleasant hill town in Sabaragamuwa, sitting where the gem country begins to rise towards the central highlands. Its name is known to archaeologists worldwide for "Balangoda Man", the prehistoric people whose remains were found in caves in the region.

Prehistoric heritage

Caves around Balangoda have yielded some of the oldest human remains in South Asia, giving the culture its name. The surrounding hills are dotted with rock shelters and old paths.

Towards the highlands

Balangoda is a gateway for routes up towards Horton Plains and the southern edge of the hill country, through tea estates, waterfalls and cool mountain air.

Getting there

Balangoda lies on the road between Ratnapura and the Uva hills, well connected by bus and a scenic drive through gem and tea country.
