Bahirawakanda Temple: The Best View Over Kandy
Bahirawakanda Vihara sits on the highest hill in the middle of Kandy, crowned by a 26 metre seated Buddha that you can see from almost anywhere in town. Up close the statue is huge, and the terrace around its base gives you the widest view of Kandy you can get.
What to expect
The statue is one of the tallest Buddha figures in Sri Lanka, painted bright white and lit at night. From the platform you look straight down over the lake, the Temple of the Tooth, and the rooftops climbing the hills on the far side.
Good to know
It is a short, steep tuk-tuk ride or a sweaty walk up from the town centre. Dress modestly and remove your shoes near the shrine. Late afternoon gives the softest light for photos and a cooler climb.
