Aukana: A Standing Buddha Carved From Living Rock
The Aukana Buddha is a tall standing statue near Kekirawa, believed to date from around the fifth century and the reign of King Dhatusena. Carved almost entirely from a single rock, it is admired for the detail of its robe and its calm expression. The figure catches the first light of dawn beautifully.
The statue
Standing many metres high, the Buddha is shown in the asisa mudra, a blessing gesture. The carving of the drapery is remarkably fine given its age and scale.
Best time to visit
Aukana is traditionally viewed at sunrise, when early light falls softly on the face. Mornings are also cooler, which is welcome in this dry zone region.
Getting there
The site is a short drive from Kekirawa, off the route between Dambulla and Anuradhapura. A small entry fee applies, and modest dress is expected at this sacred place.
