Arugam Bay: Surf by Day, Party by Night
By Days of Iru and Opa
Arugam Bay is Sri Lanka’s surf-town poster child. In season the point breaks draw surfers from around the world, and the single laid-back strip turns social every night.
The surf
Main Point and nearby breaks suit a range of levels, with the east-coast season running roughly from April to October, opposite the south.
The nights
After the evening session, beach bars and bonfires bring everyone together. It is a friendly, barefoot scene built around the surf.
Beyond the waves
Rest days mean lagoon safaris, elephants at Kumana and Lahugala, and long empty beaches just out of town.
