Anawilundawa: Ancient Tanks Turned Bird Haven
Anawilundawa is a wetland sanctuary on the north western coast, built around a chain of ancient irrigation tanks bordered by mangroves and the sea. Recognised internationally for its importance to birdlife, it is a rewarding and peaceful spot for birdwatchers. The mix of freshwater, mangrove and coastal habitats packs in a lot of variety.

The tanks draw herons, egrets, cormorants, kingfishers and many migratory species, especially in the cooler months. Early morning is the prime time to watch.

Anawilundawa lies off the main road between Chilaw and Puttalam, a manageable drive from the coast. Bring binoculars, water and repellent, and tread lightly in this protected area.
