Ambuluwawa Tower: The Spiralling Viewpoint at Gampola

By Days of Iru and Opa

Ambuluwawa is a multi-religious complex on a hilltop near Gampola, topped by a slim white tower that spirals up to a dizzying viewpoint. The climb up the narrowing steps is genuinely nerve-testing and hugely popular for it.

What to expect

The tower gets narrower and the steps steeper as you go, until you are edging around the outside with a full 360 view of the central hills. At the base, the complex brings together symbols of several religions.

Good to know

It is not for anyone with a serious fear of heights, and it gets crowded, which makes the top feel tighter. Go early and take your time on the steps.
