Ahungalla is a calm stretch of golden west-coast sand between the busier resorts of Bentota and Hikkaduwa. It is best known for wide, uncrowded beaches, glowing sunsets and a couple of turtle hatcheries along the shore.

The beach

The sand here is broad and gentle, backed by a few resorts and fishing hamlets. It is an easy place to slow down, swim in the calmer months and watch the sun drop into the sea.

Turtle hatcheries

Small hatcheries along the coast care for eggs and release hatchlings, and some let visitors learn about the sea turtles that nest on this shore. Choose responsibly run ones that prioritise the animals.

Getting there

Ahungalla is on the southern coastal road and railway, a short hop from Bentota or Hikkaduwa, and reachable from Colombo via the coastal road or the southern expressway.
