Abhayagiri was once a huge monastic complex in the northern part of Anuradhapura's sacred city, a centre of learning that drew monks and scholars from far away. Its restored stupa, ponds, moonstones and guardstones spread across a wide, shaded area. Exploring it feels like wandering a lost city.

The great stupa

The centrepiece is a large brick stupa, partly restored, that once rivalled the other giants of Anuradhapura. Around it lie the foundations of halls, refectories and dwellings.

Highlights to find

Look for the elegant Samadhi Buddha statue, the beautifully carved moonstone and the twin ponds known as the Kuttam Pokuna nearby. Each rewards a closer look.

Getting around

The area is large, so a bicycle or a vehicle helps you cover it comfortably. Bring water and sun protection, and allow a good chunk of time to do it justice.
